Paul Klee — Angel Applicant | Color Your Own Canvas Print

$25.00

This canvas is based on Angel Applicant, one of the many angel figures Paul Klee created in the final years of his life. Klee — born in Switzerland in 1879 and trained at the Bauhaus, where he also taught — spent his last period making a remarkable series of angels: awkward, uncertain, sometimes comic creatures that felt nothing like the majestic beings of classical painting. Art historians have long debated whether they reflected his own sense of fragility as his health declined, or simply his lifelong delight in turning serious subjects gently upside down. Probably both.

Angel Applicant has that characteristic Klee quality: a figure reduced to its essentials, outlined with the confident simplicity of a child's drawing and the quiet intelligence of a master. It is serious and playful at exactly the same time.

I outlined the composition by hand on a drawing tablet, following Klee's spare, deliberate lines to preserve the wit and warmth of the original. Deceptively simple to look at — deeply satisfying to color.

No art background needed. Just curiosity and a set of pencils, paints, or acrylic markers.
